A side view of the mantle at Buckland Abbey showing the coat-of-arms
(hard to see in the photo) that Sir Francis used during his lifetime,
Quarterly 1 & 4, a wyvern displayed and 2 & 3 a fess wavy between two estoiles.
The placement of the quartered arms on the side of the chimney has been pointed
to as evidence that someone may have been trying to underemphasize the quartered
coat, supporting the argument that Sir Francis had usurped the arms of Ashe.
However, it is also possible that during the time of Sir Francis Drake the royal
arms would have been on the front of the chimney. Also, the date above
(1655) would have been during the interregnum, and the Drakes of Buckland were
of the Parliamentary party. If so, the royal arms may have been removed in 1655.
On the opposite side of the mantle (not seen) are two shields, the upper one:
A fess barry wavy thereon a duck naiant (Maddock of Plymouth)
and the
the lower one:
Within three increscents as many mullets (Gregorie).
